What is Reiki?

The word "reiki" is made up of two words: rei - meaning 'universal' or 'spiritual' and Ki - meaning 'life energy'.  Together, the word 'reiki' means Universal Life Energy.  In practice, Reiki is a natural healing technique, which taps into the Universal Life Energy, an energy that is all around us... God's all-pervading healing power.  It cannot harm you, as it comes from the Supreme Creator; it goes where it is needed most, as it is an intelligent force; and everyone, both the Reiki practitioner as well as the person receiving Reiki, is renewed and benefited after a reiki session.

 This technique used to be commonly practiced in monasteries by Tibetan monks. The healing art was lost in time, but a Christian monk, Mikao Usui, rediscovered it around the 1900's. Modern reiki stems from the the teachings of Dr. Mikao Usui. His original teachings, which he referred to as a "method to achieve personal perfection", were developed as a spiritual method to aid one in finding one's own spiritual path and healing of the self, as well as a method for healing others. Many people spend too much time trying to find out more about Usui the man, but in doing so, they miss out on the true purpose of his teachings. His methods were based on meditation exercises for improvement and healing of one's life, and the main purpose of his teachings were to promote spiritual growth and service.
